Mr Claire (don't recall his real name) knew the true nature of SkyNet
and thus the fact that they had passed the Point of No Return. the only
thing he could do was to try to save his daughter. So he said to them
"you have to get to (whatever the name of that place was)". He was
quick enough to figure out that John wasn't going to leave unless he
believed that he was achieving a particular goal, so Mr C played that
card. 

The key is that he knew the truth that John didn't realize until the
very end. That and he's a guy that loves his daughter. and all loving
parents will do what they must -- even lie -- to save their kids. It's
a classic action movie cliche
