Perhaps the marker stones were carved from rocks harvested from
Racetrack Playa in California's Death Valley: If so, the markers might
be moving around under their own mysterious power. Here's a story on

Several years ago, the Late Show sought out new talent  by hosting an
open mic. They cut to shots of a microphone stand located in Death
Valley, with a railroad visible in the far distance.  I expected at
some point those sliding rocks would figure into this Letterman
running gag, but they didn't.
