Earwigs are those awful looking insects with pincher-like
appendages on their rear-end. Also, I coined the term earwig to
mean a song that you dislike which gets stuck in your head.

Does anyone else remember the episode of Rod Serling's
'Night Gallery' with the earwigs? That still gives me the
heebie-jeebies.
