If the magician brings up an audience member to check the padlocks it
means that 
the release is not through the padlocks.

If the magician is in mortal danger and a second later appears in another
part 
of the theater, it means the magician got out of the shackles when the
screen 
was lowered. And the person whose silhouette was shown struggling with the

shackles was not directly underneath the saw blades.
