When acts like Mac King have a television spot they usually perform
something from their regular show. Something they are very comfortable
with
and something that plays as well on TV as it does live. Understandably,
they don't want to 'burn off' too much material from their live shows.
While it is true that King has done the fish act on television before,
this
may well have been the network debut of the piece. I'd guess many more
people who had never seen it before saw it last night.

There was one moment in the piece that showed how ingrained the patter
becomes in a performer who does it twice a day for years. At one point he
referred to something that belonged to his "grandma, too". The "too"
refers
to an earlier line in the act (but not used in his appearance here) where
he
says his suit was made from what used to be his grandma's curtains. After
years of repetition it must be hard to get your mouth to say it
differently
for a TV appearance.

But at least King says the same lines to a different audience each showe.
Dave can't seem to stop himself from repeating the same material to his
regular viewers. I've lost count of how many times he's repeated the
business about the primaries moving to Canada, then to Europe, ect. Last
night was the premier of this former desk bit in the monologue.
Conversely,
I guess, the, "He looks like a guy..." schtick will move to the desk.
