Assuming they rehearsed the bit earlier in the afternoon, I sort of
blame the director( sorry Mr. Foley) as much as the bit itself. Unless
that was the bit, too make it so obvious.

Things don't always go as you'd like. I remember, from the LN days, a
juggler, who said that, in order to stand out, you had to have a gimmick.
His gimmick was juggling the basic food groups. We missed the moment of
impact when he did a head bounce with a big wad of butter.
(It was still hilarious)
