Voldemort could have picked the prophecy up if he wanted to---- he is
the Dark Lord it refers to and could therefore take it without
suffering any ill effect. But he didn't wish to enter the Department
of Mysteries and thereby alert the media that he was back and freakin'
awesome again.

Eventually of course he did enter the Ministry, did not get the
prophecy, but still alerted the authorities that he was at large and
in charge of the Death Eaters. So he  probably should have just gone
in and got it himself.

But who ever thought Voldy was one of the world's great thinkers?
Besides the Death Eaters? And his teachers at Hogwarts? And most of
the wizarding population?
