Probably because a lot of the spells he had cast to maintain his power 
during his rise all stopped functioning when the AK rebounded on him. 
He had IC'd a whole lot of people, and that curse fails when the caster 
dies.  So suddenly there were a whole lot of people no longer doing his 
bidding, and having a big "WTF?" moment.

She could have used the assistance of the Inklings.  They were notorious 
for tearing apart the works of Lewis and Tolkien (who discussed some of 
their projects in work) whenever weaknesses appeared to appear.
