Most Americans, we suspect, have grown entirely accustomed to news of the
latest zany "trend" that all too often blows in on the ever-varying winds
of
the social and cultural zeitgeist.
We have to admit, however; that we were caught off guard by the latest
development on the parenting front. Seems that a growing number of
American
mothers are devotees of something called "elimination communication," that
idea that infants barely weeks out of the womb can be taught to signal
that
they need - if we can borrow the parlance from another age - "to go
potty."
All the better to get the cherubic tykes more in touch with Mother Nature
and save the world and the local landfill from being cluttered with dirty
diapers and assorted associated horrors.
Infanantilization, quite obviously has come full circle.
