I was wondering where folks were.  What happened in the other
group?   Suppose Flaming Star had been a hit.   The two songs were over
by the first 15 minutes of the movie.  Here's some irony.  One of Elvis'
best roles and one of John Wayne's worst were supposed to have went to
Marlon Brando.    Remember the Duke in The Conquerors?  
         I've been watching a lot of Elvis movies lately.  The local
libraries have several on VHS or DVD.   Trailers are usually the only
extra features.   Could you imagine Elvis doing commentary for some
movies?  Too bad the studios didn't tap any of his friends or costars.
Such commentaries might be more entertaining than a few of the films.   
        How would you rate his entire film library of dramatic roles?
Jailhouse Rock and King Creole would be at the top.   Viva Las Vegas had
one of his best female co-stars.   
     Wild In The Country also showed some strong acting.  His
personality made even the fluff films enjoyable, if not great.  I'd put
Spinout toward the bottom.  That ending still makes me mad.   
         I recently watched The Trouble With Girls.   It had a
misleading title and trailer. Some of the trailers overemphasized the
songs.   Those were often the only songs in the movie.  Many of the
Camden LPs had movie songs originally released as singles or EPs.   The
CD versions have been turning at drug stores.  
            Regardng this film, it was a change of pace role for Elvis.
Talk about an ensemble piece!  He was off camera for about half of the
picture.  Yet he was the glue.   Dabney Coleman could be sleazy without
the mustache.   Denver Pyle seemed to play more bad guys when he was
clean shaven.   
       Wasn't that Susan Olsen auditioning for the pageant?  Her Cindy
Brady curls were inspired by Anissa Jones' Buffy.   Which one was older?
Ms. Mason was a rather fiesty leading lady.  I thought the film was a
little too risque.  No one wants to hear profanity in an Elvis movie.  I
don't care for it in any film.   But this was one of his better later
efforts.   Vincent Price's role was too small.   
          In hindsight,  Elvis should have done fewer and better movies.
He could have performed live more often.   Perhaps both sides would have
went on longer.   Sinatra and Crosby won Oscars.   Yet they also did
fluff films.   Dean Martin could have probably won an Oscar too.   But
he did the serious roles,  then more fluff films.
