I can't believe this is actually coming out. I first heard such a
project was under way in 1996 (I remember wisecracking that they should
get Jackson Browne to do "Not To Blame"), and then there was delay
after delay. Then I read that it was definitely in the can and ready
for release in 2000, but that a date had not been scheduled. I haven't
heard anything about it in years, until now. Some of these song
assignments were the same in the 2000 re****t -- Costello's,
MacLachlan's, and Lennox's for sure -- so, some of these performances
may have waited a while to see the light of day. But Stevie Wonder was
said to have done "Woodstock," and PM Dawn "Night In The City," and
Janet Jackson "The Beat Of Black Wings," and those do not seem to have
made the final cut, if indeed they were ever actually recorded.
The Prince track is the big surprise here. He's been doing "A Case Of
You (U)" in live shows forever; it's nice that there will be a
sanctioned version on the books.
