Yes, I suppose you are right about you need some intelligence to enjoy
hs work. way back a long time ago in 78-79 when Igot into Elvis heavily,
I admit I didn't get it all- many of the references were english locales
or slang, but one got the thrust of it or could use yer imagination-for
example the line about' you'll be a joker all your life a student at the
comedy college" really hit home with me since I had started college in a
make****ft motel & Goon Squad had a really different connotation as to me
it meant the hatchet men we used to play against in Basketball. In any
event I suppose the earlier stuff stands out for several reasons to me-
myYouth that can't be denied the freshness, brilliance, the urgency
which is so lacking in most modern music even if it's good. The
originality Elvis had along with his   inspirations before -jazz,
chamber music, roots country and elegant R&B, No matter how well done
sure as hell isn't vintage
Stones-Beatles-Kinks-Who-Motown-Stax-Elvis-Buddy Holly etc. which
inspired his first 4 albums.
