I'd probably put it a few ticks behind WIWC (it's less cohesive, and
the abandoned storytelling concept about Ivy et al is so dimly realized
that it's actually a minor irritant), but it depends on what day you
ask me. I've been listening to all of his stuff again recently,
starting with MAIT and working forward (I'm up to KOJAK VARIETY at this
point), and I'm finding I have a hard time "ranking" them. They tend to
****ft on me depending on my mood, and I basically have high regard for
every album he's ever made except for GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD and ALMOST
BLUE. GCW, quite apart from the tinny, dated production, is a so-so
collection of songs; at the level of both writing and performance, it
impresses me as the work of someone who's come to regard making music
as a job he hates but is obligated to keep doing. AB is an unmitigated
travesty about which the best can be said is that it's over with
quickly. All of the others hold up extremely well, and I love the
stylistic variety they present.
