OUT OF THE CLOSET STERN
Gary explained the next WNBC clip, Out of the Closet Stern, as a bit when
Howard acted like a homo***ual while interviewing people usually on the
phone, although the clip today was of an in-studio conversation with Elvis
Costello. In the segment, Howard kept referring to Elvis as a "she" before
asking if he'd ever had a homo***ual affair, which he said he hadn't.
When the clip was done, Ralph noted it must've been "awkward" in the
studio
that day because of the way Howard kept referring to Elvis as a woman,
while
Jon pointed out how much dead air there was during the tape because of how
shocked Elvis was by Howard's behavior. Gary then re****ted how Howard used
to break out of character when interviews were interrupted by commercials,
but, as soon as they were back on the air, he'd go right back into
character.
Jon took a call from a record executive named Jimmy, who was the person
responsible for getting Elvis booked on the show that afternoon. Jimmy
went
on to recall that Howard was relatively unknown at the time, so he used to
tell his clients to be prepared for anything when they appeared on his
show.
Jimmy added that Elvis was one of the smartest people he knew and had a
great sense of humor, but still didn't know how to react to Out of the
Closet Stern.
After playing a clip of Howard asking George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley
of
Wham!, also clients of Jimmy's, if they were gay despite being warned not
to
do so, Jimmy recalled not wanting to bring another of his clients, Billy
Joel, onto the show because he had just started dating Christie Brinkley
at
the time, and he didn't want Howard bringing it up on the air.
