"Dirge" is an accurate description of it. Actually, though, although
its melody is narrow for a pop song (it's more like a hymn), it does
*have* a tune, and even one with a certain austere beauty. It's the
other musical ingredients that are severely (intentionally)
impoverished: it has absolutely no rhythm and is almost static in terms
of harmony (if someone sang it unaccompanied, you'd be missing very
little of what's on the page). It's all texture, ambiance, mood. I
admire it in that he and his co-producer achieved their aims to
perfection, but I see why so many people can't stand it. It's certainly
not the most lovable (no allusion intended) song in his catalog.

I've always rated MLAR on the whole quite highly.
