Disco wasn't ALWAYS like that, though certainly I see what you mean.
At any rate, Elton himself had done some discoish things (even if some
didn't quite qualify as "dsico") that were far better than VICTIM OF
LOVE: Think "Philadelphia Freedom", "Bite Your Lip", "Crazy Water",
even "Part Time Love", with its very commercial (by Buckmaster
standards) strings. Even the Thom Bell stuff is good enough in its own
way. It's eminently listenable if not overly heavy on content. I'll
take the ridiculously excessive production extravaganza of "Mama Can't
Buy You Love" over the all-out-dreary nobody-awake-in-the-control-room
doldrums of "Warm Love In a Cold World" any day. Listen to "Mama Can't
Buy You Love" sometime when you have a spare few minutes (I'm not
asking anyone to MAKE time for it, mind you.) Sure the words are
almost contemptibly stupid, but I dare you to try not singing along.
That darn thing is CATCHY.
:) Andrew
