FFE/JJFFE(?) gameplay issue, wayyyy too many assassins.

Hi group,

Had something bugging me in my most recent series of games on FFE now
I've got it running again with JJFFE on a win98SE machine....

Don't think it's a JJFFE issue, as far as I remember I was having it
with FFE installed ABI (As Braben Intended) on an older machine a
while back, I just didn't quite realise it. Just mentioning it in
case.

What's happening is that I seem to be getting about 50-100 times the
assassins coming after me that I should have. I start up a new game,
take a dozen or so dodgy contracts to help get going and mostly evade
the assassins, often out-jumping them, by the time I've gone 6 months,
and got a ****p that holds together better than wet tissue in a
hurricane, and a laser that can actually dispatch something more
quickly than a magnifying glass you'd use for burning ants .... I
can't jump into a system and autopilot/timedream to the star****t
without fighting about 25-50 assassin ****ps... it gets wearing....
especially if you're trying to do missions.... I tried once or twice
"cleaning up" and just hanging around for all the assassins to catch
up, wasting them..... jumping to another system trying again, wasting
70-100... and I seem to have made no dent at all. On the humorous
side, I'm apparently going to regret dealing with Donald Sutherland,
Keith Richards and Michael Moore (Okay it was Mike) I'm damn sure
those names would have clicked in the BBS ads if I HAD dealt with
them...

Seems the assassin "Regret dealing with" things have just gone totally
random, I've got "Police" and "Fed" ****ps after me, I annoyed the
Mafia and the Imperials, but steered clear of police and fed
fugitives, 'coz of wondering if it would help me advance any
quicker...

So... used that nifty tool FFEstarsys the other day to look at some of
my saved positions and HOLY PINNACLE OF MOUNT ABSTINANCE (may it
someday be returned) I have got a LOT of assassins after me, there's
like a solid cone of them following me in any one system, I can jump
out to the middle of nowhere and there's 200+ ****ps waiting, in
killing 50 on the way to a star****t I'm probably only scratching the
surface of what's actually in the system headed towards me.

So, keep wondering how long this can hold up before the game engine
splits at the seams and won't let me play. Also seem to be in doubt
that all of these assassin kills are counting towards my rating, I
seem to go from below average to dangerous pretty quick in a mere
couple of hours of the "duck shoot" at a photo target. I can spend all
afternoon and evening, jumping system to system and clearing up
assassins and not seem to move. Early on they seem to count, after
"competent" or when you start seeing more than a couple or three in a
system, they don't seem to be counting every time. I know it's a big
jump between ranks further up, but I can clear up pirates or go on a
military duck shoot and get ranks a lot faster than seems to be
happening.

Would anyone have any tips how to avoid this from happening? It is
really annoying, having to fight through EVERY system, EVERY time, and
yes, it's so bad now that setting the stardreamer slower isn't helping
all that much. (And how is it the police won't come out of the station
when I'm getting shot at right outside.... until I shoot back... never
expected them to in pirate systems, but when I'm on the front doorstep
Li Qing Jao I kinda expect SERVICE dammit)

Anyone know the actual range of an energy bomb by the way? Just
wondering what would happen if I flew wide circles around a system,
herding all the assassin ****ps together and then flew through the
middle and set off an energy bomb.... yeah I know, won't really solve
the main problem but would be more fun than mud wrestling an Exiocan
polar bear to get so many ****ps at once....
