"Belgariad" is a play on the ancient greek epic poem, the Illiad. The
Illiad recounts the story of the Greek seige of Troy, the capital city
of llium. The Illiad is the story of Illium, just as The Belgariad is
the story of Belgarion.
"Mallorean" is more or less the same idea. I wouldn't argue that the
book is specifically about Mallorea even if most of the series is set
there and there abouts, but I would argue that that is the basic idea
behind the name. And Mallorean sounds better than Malloriad.
