They are little yes. But they are also imho comfortably his worst work (if

still quite good) - his later semi historical novels with just a little 
fantasy have all been very good indeed.
I think he (or his publishers) must have felt the need to write a
traditional
fantasy series to start with.

As for other authors not yet mentioned I can warmly recomend pretty well 
everything CJCherryh has written. (Which is a lot by now :)).
