Hoist by his own petard

by Nexie <greenknight@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jan 11, 2006 at 12:25 AM

Anyone see the Conspiracies programme on SKY1 tonight? Forgive me if I'm
a bit behind the times and reiterating what people already know, I
just thought it was interesting.

The programme was about theories why the Gulf wars actually happened.
I'm sure most people believe now that it had nothing to do with a "war
on terror" (which was a convenient excuse to invade Iraq, when Bush
failed to track down Osama Bin Laden), and generally accept that it was
the oil that was the real reason.

What I didn't realise was that (so the theory goes) it's not just about
controlling the oil reserves themselves (of which America uses 25% of
the global production), but about the currency that is used to buy and
sell the oil.

America (with British collusion) has had a strangle-hold on the currency
used for trading oil (the dollar, of course), and even managed to
persuade the OPEC countries in the 70's to trade in dollars instead of
any other currency.

The upshot of this is that for countries to buy oil from anywhere in the
world, they must trade with America first to get the dollars to buy the
oil. The oil producing countries then bank the dollars in...you guessed
it...America, who borrow the cash to pay for their national debt, and
merrily print more dollars to start the cycle again.

What's this got to do with Iraq? Well, a certain Mr. Hussain decided
that instead of using dollars, he was going to use the Euro to trade
oil. "uh-oh!" thought Bush, "if people start using the Euro, then where
does the money come from that pays off our debts?! Our economy will
crash! Bollocks!" (though he may not have said "bollocks", that's just
artistic license).

So, off to war goes GI Bush and his mate Tony to save Iraq from the Evil
Darth Vader. A short scuffle later, and lo and behold! The newly
installed government of Iraq decides to trade oil in dolllars again
(despite losing 17% in profits by not trading in Euros). Not to mention
all the billions of dollars that George and Tony stand to make from the
arms sales, re-building contracts, etc. which other countries like
France, Germany and Russia are excluded from cos they're not in George's
gang. Phew! Close shave.

But! What's this? That uppity Iran has decided to set up it's own oil
trading market using the Euro, not the dollar. Worse still, it's invited
all the other oil-producing countries to use their market, several of
which have already agreed including Saudi Arabia (and where the Saudi's
lead, others follow).

"Bollocks!" said George (I'm pretty sure he did say it this time), "I
think it's time for a cunning plan...." and sidles off to start writing
his "Iran is evil" speech with his best crayons....

Odds on war with Iran in the next 5 years - evens.
Odds on America/Britain suffering another dastardly attack like Pearl
Harbor or the Twin Towers to justify war with Iran - 5/4 on.
Odds on the next Prime Minister waving bye-bye to the "Special
Relation****p" and adopting the Euro when America's economy collapses
after failing to convince the global community that Iran has WMD - 3/1.
