"The David Lynch adaptation of DUNE is an acquired taste to say the
least. Not a horrible film, but not a great one either, and Lynch knew
this (that's why he had his name pullled). With various of renditions
of the Frank Herbert series of books, it looked grim for DUNE to
continue it's screen franchise.
Well it was confirmed today that THE KINGDOM director, Peter Berg has
stepped into the directors chair to helm the remake of DUNE. Now
normally I'd be complaining about remakes, but this is actually one I
really want to see. Berg confirmed to MTV MOVIES BLOG that it plans
for him to direct the film is "a done deal", and describes his vision
of the film to be "big big big".
As any fan of the Frank Herbert classic knows, "Dune" received the big
screen treatment once before in a divisive David Lynch film. Berg said
that while he's "a big fan of Lynch," he believes "that interpretation
has left the door wide open for a remake."
Now I'm sort of psyched to see what a revival of DUNE can do. If
you're unfamiliar with the Herbert books or the film or the world of
DUNE in general, the first movie was about:
Set in a distant future where life in the universe and space travel is
dependent upon a spice found only on the planet Dune, this film tracks
the rise of young Paul Atreides, son of good Duke Lito, from the time
of his father's betrayal and murder by a rival lord, Baron Harkonnen,
to his discovery of the great secret behind the planet Dune and his
own destiny, which is to free the planet and its denizens of the cruel
rule of the Emperor.
