Okay, so my argument was kind of thin; but I called it.
There is going to be a new Dune movie.
Now I do like Lynch's sonic gun invention, and I know that Berg will
be hard pressed not
to cast Shia Leboeuf as Paul Atreides.
It will be impossible to top Lynch's casting, honestly, but
okay let's have fun:
Duke Leto:
Daniel Day Lewis (not gonna happen, but one can hope)
Liam Neeson
Me
Jessica:
Tia Leoni (hard pressed to seem regal- too tragic)
Nicole Kidman with her real hair colour (she can act, very well,
just remember that, and is the correct age) ,
Kate Winslet (still too young? maybe - wow how time flies though)
Cate B. ? Maybe too distracting?
Paul:
Shia Leboef (really, who else, please>>?)
Daniel Radcliffe *what's with all the gay photos out there, I mean
that's gonna hurt the career Daniel, unless you macho [sic] it out a
bit. Daniel currently looks the part.
(NOT Leonardo DiCaprio, he's past it - but he would have been good -
maybe ideal)
Reverend Mother Gaius:
Lauren Bacall
Chani:
Mischa Barton (I'm basing that only on looks)
Natalie Portman (certainly brings out the protective instincts)
Stilgar:
Beloved Aussi Rusell seems to have gone pudge so:
Willem Dafoe (if not leto)
Tony Shalhoub (he should play it manically; could he, not a romantic
lead?)
Baron Harkonnen:
(are there no fatties in film anymore? there is one:
Wayne Knight (ya - he would be good and take it seriously - he can
play dark)
or pork out that
Feyd Rautha:
Cast someone who doesn't lool like a quarterback. Gotta be wire-y.
Are there any actual actors out there?
Oh yeah:
Cillian Murphy. Awesome.
Liet Kynes
Willem Dafoe (see he could do anything - but he seems very Liet-y
Beast Rabban:
"No Country for Old Men" , killer Javier Bardem ; there is only one.
___________ okay your turn. :)
-K.
RE: (Oh yeah , the bragging - ty very much)

The Case for Suspecting a New Dune Movie_
Sept. 24th, 2006,
Khal Shariff
I have been around the net for long enough as a professional, and
trust my opinion on these sorts of things: I believe a new Dune movie
is in the works. As a bit of a sci-fi geek, I am a little ego-
challenged (like the rest of you ;) , but here's the case.
A New Dune Movie is Suspected in the Works because:
1. _Moguls would see the opportunity_
Lord of the Rings, Narnia, what other tome of fantasy would be
similar in scale? Narnia was picked up because of its outward
similarity, and most importantly, popular appeal. If you ask any
reader of fiction of the imagination what novel ranks with Tolkein's
Lord of the Rings, since 1970 or so, they would answer in one
word: "Dune." Projects have been green-lit for less and it's been
over 20 years since the last theatrical release. Yet, Dune remains
popular. With new novels, a more than nice couple of mini-series on
sci-fi, and perennial interest, "Dune" would enter a lot of
conversations. The Dune computer games orginated the Real-Time-
Simulation form, giving early rise in part to the form of video-game.
This is a generation out there that has largely never heard of
Lynch's Dune, and although it's one of my favourites, from a strictly
business sense, well, it makes sense to create and mine this property.
2. _The Online Groups are picking up the Buzz_
With dollars riding on the line, there are odd prods for
intelligence. These questions are coming from somewhere. Although
the "would you help BH/KA write the next book" post's author may come
forward, there is enough activity this time around to cause some
serious chin-rubbing. There are even questions floating around in
general groups of an earlier shooting script by Jodorowsky, obscure,
arcane knowledge most of the time.
It doesn't take a genius to recognize that posts are up. But why else?
3. _Dune is an Islamic text, is more Topical than it's ever been_
Do I have to say it, the war in Iraq resembles more Dune than
anything that occurred around WWI (Lawrence of Arabia has good
resemblance), and it's almost like Frank Herbert had a bit of
prescience. Striding with grace the science of religion and the
science (fiction) of humanity, Frank Herbert's imagining of the human
species is vibrant. Every Iman out of Iran and every Nazrallah shares
the same fevered dreams of the general Fremen populace. Herbert's
religions, with a dash of Christianity, and a splash of Judaism,
distilled with an overcast of conflict and personal strength and
sacrifice, drum through everypage with a frequency more in tune with
today's news than at any other time. The one thing that might stop
Dune from being done as a movie again, and indeed the danger of it,
is that this examination of the different religions might be watered
down out of fear.
4. Dune is Good, exciting with the merit of Intelligence.
Frank Herbert was also an ecologist. Upon reading, Dune exposes one
to possiblities tempered with a scientist's good sense. The novel
Dune is not merely fanstastic, it informs and opens the mind to ideas
like no other work of fiction, while maintaining a sense of
adventure. This Paul Atreides that comes through the adventure is
stamped with the most humanity and civilization and knowledge that
the author could imagine.
In that imagining, something unique was created, and the novel is
timeless, but still retains a modern hollywood sensibility and
dramatic urgency.
In conclusion, my sci-fi geekness demands thus I say "first!," and
that also a wish to those producers that as many of the original
designers be involved with the new production as possible (Ron
Miller, for example). Who would direct? Like many projects, it would
take a good one, someone like a James Cameron, or maybe, just maybe
Ron Moore could be tempted to produce in parallel to BSG, just as
Abrams takes on Star Trek for Paramount?
Money-waving aside, it's a great opportunity for the right director
given time to do it right, and Dune is worth making the effort for.
