Perhaps both an homage and answer to what Asimov did with the Robot and 
Foundation series.

My assumption is that they do know what they're doing as does the 
publisher. Readers seem to like book series the way they like television 
series - a familiar universe with stories just exciting enough to hold 
their interest until the next installment. People seem to like the 
familiar whether it's just he same old thing or not. I always liken it to 
a peanut butter sandwich - if I eat one tomorrow it's because I expect it 
to taste the same as it did the last time I ate one, that's why I'm eating

it.
