Well goodness, of course Dune is 'escapist reading.' What else would
anyone
want or expect it to be? That's not to say that it isn't interesting in
other ways. The religious syncretism, for instance, is a noteworthy theme.
Many people have tried to create a synthesis of the world's major
religions,
and it's worth looking at fictional expressions of this project if you
want
to see how widespread its influence is. The classic example is
Manichaeism,
and it's primarily because of my interest in it that I find Dune
interesting.
