I think so. In the beginning of the series I think Herbert bought a
little bit into the sixties notion that consciousness can be expanded
by drugs and chemicals. I think its more true that he was actually
writing about human potential, but the fact is that drugs played a big
part of that. In the 80's as he was writing the final books that
notion kind of goes away, even though he has to remain true to the
world he created, and spice was a part of it.
