I dunno, but when Capital Cities Comms bought ABC "back in the day," I
remember ABC's whole lineup getting much, much blander. CCC was
supposedly
very much wired into the "Moral Majority." After the Disney buy-out of
ABC/Capital Cities, things actually improved - probably because Disney
understands entertainment much more than the suits at CCC did.
That being said, yes, I can smell fear emanating from the Disney
boardroom.
They have to let people show bootie on "NYPD Blue" or people will stop
watching it, they think, and it's probably driving them up the wall
because
"NYPD Blue" is one of their cash cows. So IMO, they're playing around
with
the other shows in their lineup to make them less offensive to the
wingnuts
who are always threatening to boycott advertisers if (insert name of TV
program) continues to offend them.
The trouble is, it's dumb reasoning. Outrage and intolerance don't
average
out like that. Give these people an inch, they'll take a mile. Trust me,
I
know some of them (and wish I'd never met them, and never had to again).
You could run Mother Angelica reruns 24/7 on ABC and the other
televangelists would organize boycotts 'cause she's Catholic (and don't
ask
me to explain that particular prejudice, I don't even see what their
problem
is - their REAL problem, not the propaganda they spew).
IMO, again, Drew's a little out there for some of the suits at Disney.
They're really insecure about his show because (a) he's fat - remember,
Disney's execs damn near drove Margaret Cho insane when she was doing
"American Girl" for them, over her weight - they didn't care that people
liked the show, they hated the idea of taking the risk that they'd lose
key
demographics if the 18 - 24 year old guys didn't have wet dreams about
her.
The same thing probably holds true for Drew (but substitute 18 - 34 year
old
women for the 18 - 24 yo guys).
Then again, they really went the distance and beyond with Ellen DeGeneres.
The last few episodes of "Ellen" were IMO sheer narcissism masquerading as
situation comedy. And I'd feel the same way if she liked guys and not
girls.
Sometimes, there's just too much information out there. YMMV, though, and
that's why they put channel selectors on remotes. A lot of people used
theirs when Ellen started having her character explore her lesbianism on
the
screen. I mean, you people out there don't want to know what my wife and
I
do between the sheets, and I don't want to share the details (even though
we're happy with the results, especially when.... ). I really wouldn't
want
to go through all that on television.
BTW, there's this great Monty Python sketch where Eric Idle plays a
British
housewife who's on the phone to the BBC...
"Yes, hello... I want to complain about all this *** on television... I
mean, I keep falling off!"
