It's only cornball because it was done cornball.  The movie isn't 
faithfull at all.  Mona works in an office instead of being a princess?  
Thugs that sleep in cribs?  The idiotic fight at the end?  Liquid gold? 
DOC SAVAGE logos on everything?  Monk's the worst fighter in the group?  
Heck, they didn't even get the year right.
