My uncle, an avid Doc Savage fan, claimed that he invented the
semicolon but I have yet to see one of his royalty checks.
Personally, I like the asterisk. Without the lowly asterisk, footnotes
would be out on the street sleeping in a cardboard box. My least
favorite is the period, for obvious reasons. I do like exclamation
points but they tend to be too loud and cause problems, especially
after curfew. I admit that hyphens are cute as a button but I wouldn't
want to bring one home to mum. Parenthesis are too huggy and make me
lisp. Make mine the asterisk, hands down.
