Saw it last Thursday. Not terribly impressed. MMc was a reasonable Pitt
- I thought there was potential there. Zahn was miscast as Giordino and
let down by corny dialogue. I didn't like what they did to Rudi Gunn's
character, and William Macy's Admiral Sandecker wasn't what I was
expecting (he didn't seem to have any authority - in the books he's a
highly respected tough-talking S.O.B; in the movie you see none of that).
Yves Massarde had a really dodgy pseudo-French accent which slipped a
few times - he wasn't a particularly tough villain either. General Kazim
was a non-entity, and seemed like more of a drugs baron than a military
dictator.
That said, the action scenes were pretty good, if a bit run-of-the-mill.
Closer to the novel than Raise The Titanic was, but still far removed.
I'll probably buy it on DVD, if only to complete my collection, and if
there's another one in the franchise, I'd go see it. I wasn't expecting
it to be faithful to the book, and I wasn't dissapointed. Overall, I got
a feeling of "they could have done so much better with that $160m"
Danny.
