The way I see it is... The version of Pacific Vortex that was published
is not the same text as Cussler originally wrote. When they published it
in the 80s, it was heavily re-written to try and fit in with the rest of
the series. Despite that, I get the impression that when Cussler refers
to the 'Pacific Vortex affair' in later stories, he's got more of the
original version in mind. There are a couple of other discrepancies that
might bear this theory out.
There are also a couple of instances of editors removing or changing
parts of the story without Cusslers knowledge. For example, Delphi Moran
was originally called Delphi Ea. Clive didn't realise this until much
later. Also, in Raise The Titanic, the part in which Dana Seagram and
the President got it together was removed and Clive didn't realise until
an interviewer brought the subject up.
