TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL 2006
Q & A: David Duchovny
By Matt Windman
Special to amNewYork
April 21, 2006
David Duchovny stars in the satirical film, "The TV Set," about
the making of a TV pilot and the kinds of behind-the-scenes
horrors that arise during the process.
Duchovny spoke to amNewYork about the movie, which premieres
next week at the festival's International Narrative Competition.
What made you want to be in "The TV Set?"
Well, it was kind of against type for me, which was nice. ... Also,
just that it's a comedy. A comedy that would come from a heightened
sense of reality, but not (be) silly and ridiculous. It was a fine
line in terms of comedy and character that was really intriguing to me.
Do you think the film's depiction of the television industry is
realistic?
What I think is realistic and interesting about the film is how it's a
succession of tiny little compromises that eventually lead to a huge
compromise. ... That's really what does happen in film and television.
.... Before you know it, you've completely surgically altered this
thing that you started with in the beginning.
Can you tell us about any writing projects you are working on?
There's one I have at Disney with my wife (Tea Leoni) attached to
star in it. It's a comedy about this woman I read about a couple
of years ago. A recent divorcee in Arkansas who ends up becoming
the top seller of ***ual toys door to door in the south. Kind of
the Tupperware lady of *** toys.
Don't you also have a 9/11 project in development?
I have a story, though I haven't written a script. ... It's not so
much on terrorism or the actual event of 9/11, but the human response
to that kind of catastrophic attack. ... I'm just getting started
on it, and I hope I can pull it off.
Might you eventually consider doing another "X-Files" film?
Yeah. I'm friends with Chris Carter, the creator of the show,
and we're always talking about it. It's just a matter of getting
the timing right and getting all the principal players in the
same city at the same time. Where there's a will there's a way,
and we will get it done, hopefully in the next couple of years.
