Denim, Diamonds -- And David Duchovny
By JANICE ARNOLD

Former X-Files star David Duchovny made a surprise visit to the
huge Denim and Diamonds bash in sup****t of the Jewish General
Hospital's Hope and Cope sup****t program for cancer patients.
Duchovny dropped in on the arm of Hope and Cope founder Sheila
Kussner at Bonsecours Market in Old Montreal, where over 800
young adults were already well into party mode.
This wasn't just a token stop. Duchovny shmoozed with admirers
and the just curious, then got up on stage to give a hand to
auctioneer Ross Paperman. Duchovny hopped onto a Stingray
bicycle that had been donated by Dorel Industries, and helped
push the price up to $1,900 by offering to have his photo
taken with the buyer (or his wife or girlfriend).
Duchovny is in Montreal to shoot the movie The Secret, a
supernatural drama directed by Swiss actor/filmmaker Vincent
Perez, who also came to Denim and Diamonds. Duchovny wrote,
directed and stars in House of D, currently showing in theatres.
Kussner managed to get to Duchovny through his driver while he
was in Montreal -- she obtained his name from a source at Mel's
Cite du Cinema. Like everyone else, Duchovny could not say no to
the irrepressible Kussner, who can be very persuasive when it comes
to a cause that makes life more bearable for those with cancer.
"I didn't have to twist his arm at all. He was very
accommodating, so easy, so giving, just a doll. He's not your
temperamental Hollywood type at all," said Kussner of the actor.
At least two other celebrities turned out for Denim and Diamonds:
rap artist Missy Elliott and Eva Pigford, the winner of America's
Next Top Model reality show. Nineteen-year-old "The Diva"
Pigford thrilled photographers when she coquettishly nibbled
on the tiniest piece of smoked meat.
Elliott and Pigford were brought to Montreal by Joey Adler,
president of Diesel Jeans. The celebrities, Kussner emphasized,
were not paid for their appearances.
In fact, the Hope and Cope young adult division cleared nearly
$250,000 because almost everything was donated. The principal
sponsor was Parasuco jean manufacturers and Birks jewellers --
the "denim" and the "diamonds."
The event, which went on till 2 a.m., was co-chaired Elayne
Baron-Starr and Mona Iny-****ri.
The honorees were Dr. Marcia Gillman and Michael Flicker,
a young couple with four children. Both have had personal
experience with cancer in the past two years.
Instead of a program book, a professional fa****on magazine was
produced, which includes articles about health and fitness,
and stories of hope and courage by women living with cancer.
Proceeds from Denim and Diamonds go mainly to Hope and Cope's
compassionate fund, which provides services to cancer patients
and their families in financial difficulty, the JGH's Wellness
House, set to open next spring, and to the palliative-care unit.
