A list of qualified candidates is selected from among public
suggestions, then evaluated by a volunteer board of directors, which
makes the final decision.
"We have a fairly diverse and representative board of directors and
selection committee," Soumalias said. "But there's rarely a week that
goes by that we don't receive a name that causes us to slap each other
on the back of the head and say: 'Why didn't we think of this one
ourselves?' "
