I left the hospital with eleven prescriptions (with side-effects), and =
an enlarged heart which would remain enlarged. I stumbled onto a natural =
medicines paperback at the drug store while picking up my prescriptions =
and discovered I could reduce or eliminate the risks of my prescription =
drugs by replacing them with natural medicines. Fortunately, my doctors =
were cooperative, adjusting my prescriptions as I began finding natural =
alternatives. The only prescription I was strongly urged to continue was =
Warfarin, but I was permitted to switch to a natural alternative any.=20
There was a bonus to the natural regimen. My heart returned to normal =
size. =20
Most, if not all, prescription drugs come with warnings of possible =
reactions, which in some cases may be fatal, and we find if the drugs =
are harmful by using them. When we read the list of possible =
interactions that come with our prescriptions, sometimes they list =
foods, vitamins, minerals, or supplements with which the drugs interact. =
We need to find out why and how they interact. We may be able to use the =
natural product to reduce our reliance upon prescription drugs. If the =
food or supplement "potentiates" the prescription drug, the drug might =
be replaced by the food or supplement with no side-effects.=20
In my case, I reacted to a prescription drug, a "calcium channel =
blocker" used to treat heart disease and high blood-pressure. I was able =
to replace it with "Hawthorn," a supplement of Hawthorn berries, which =
does the same thing as the drug. The supplement is risk free, and I'm =
still recovering from the side-effects of the prescription drug. In this =
case I told my doctor about the replacement after making the change, but =
I would recommend discussing it with the doctor first.
Another advantage to the non-prescription route is cost. My cholesterol =
was high and slicing a banana into a bowl of oatmeal worked better than =
the alternative, a $100+ a month "statin" drug.
