Hi there,
I'm a Telecommunications Workers Union member and the company I'm locked
out of right now has employed AFI International as a security contractor
for all site locations. They videotape us constantly in an attempt to gain
injunctions in the courts to limit our picketing.
Some pickets have rumours of intimidation, social engineering and outright
attacks by AFI members. Also, stormtrooper riot-gear tactics have been
utilized to get scab busses into and out of compounds. (This was reported
on the news.) They're like a paramilitary outfit minus the weaponry it
seems.
I live in Canada -- where I'm supposed to be protected by PIPEDA
legislation -- but it doesn't seem to be doing much good these days. I've
repeatedly asked these guys and their parent corporation to see their
licensing and copies of the surveillance material and they always insist
they can't / won't show me anything.
I'm just wondering if any of you have had dealings with AFI (or similar
groups) on the picket lines before? They seem to be escalating their
engagement. Just yesterday, I was standing on a line and one of their
members came out to the edge of the driveway and glared me down for about
an hour.
Also, managers I have never met before suddenly know my first name and are
starting to use it in an attempt to shake us up. I wasn't intimidated but
some people were.
We're only 44 days into the lockout. It seems the guys with guns and
baseball bats have a new way of beating union members down these days. How
much can we expect these goons to step it up? What sort of tactics have
you
employed to fight back at these guys without causing usable injunction
material? Any comments? Any ideas?
Thanks!
p.s. Sorry cDc but this seems like something that __ought__ to get cross-
posted to your white hat group. *wink wink*
