I don't remember last season's appearance, but there were a

Hm. Perhaps it's something like peacock feathers or bird of
paradise crescents: being able to carry on despite such an obvious
disadvantage -- a huge tail is basically a waste of food calories and
as visible to predators as it is to females -- becomes a sign of
virility. A critter that could carry on despite having a hand filled
up with needed brains is obviously better-skilled at survival than
one which needs two hands for it, right?
That's very sketchy, of course, but that's probably good enough
to use the idea while claiming science fiction credentials.
Did you hear the guy who wrote 'Blink' is taking over the show?
