On the other hand, we don't really know these people. Maybe Leno is
actually fine, in person, who knows. And I don't think we should hope
for anyone to bomb, because Conan himself is going to have a pretty
hard time taking over the Tonight Show spot.
Late Night is, in effect, a show about being a lonely young person
awake at 12:30 p.m. and all of the stuff that goes on in your head or
on your TV screen.
The Tonight Show is, like the Daily Show, really a kind of light news
commentary show that helps you figure out what went on that day and
also has some comedy bits. I know that Conan can easily do that kind
of show if he wants to, partly because he got his start at HBO
writing for a news parody show. But I think he's only going to succeed
at the Tonight Show if he says, "Yes, I'm going to do a somewhat
updated, somewhat edgier version of the Tonight Show, even if that
means I have to add some writers who are more like the Tonight Show
writers and are more into the news."
If Conan thinks he's just going to take his existing show and do it at
11:30 p.m., then maybe he'll make us happy, but he'll outrage all of
the people who use the Tonight Show as a kind of more middle-of-the-
road, more feature-y Daily Show kind of show.
On the other hand, if Conan ends up not being happy at the Tonight
Show, then maybe he can move back to Connecticut and run against
Lieberman for Senate in 2012.
