While her look and sound have shifted every couple of years, the
diminutive pop chameleon’s massive voice has been her strongest selling
point in a music industry chock-full of fakes, floozies and mimes.
Aguilera’s current look – long, tousled blonde hair – is partly inspired
by Marilyn Monroe, while her sound is a pastiche of 40s harmony singing
groups (think the Andrews Sisters), 60s soul (Marvin Gaye, Aretha
Franklin) and 90s hip-hop and R&B.
Of course, with her pregnancy to music executive husband Jordan Bratman
all but officially confirmed, the 26-year-old star’s next fashion
statement will have to include some loose-fitting garments.
At the first concert of her Australian Back to Basics tour at Burswood
Dome on Friday night, however, Aguilera was showing no signs of a career
slowdown. She fairly burst out of the blocks, emerging from behind a
massive screen to the pulsating horn riffs of brilliant single Ain’t No
Other Man.
This dazzling opening saw Aguilera in Michael Jackson mode, a white
fedora obscuring her face as she and her eight dancers (four muscle men
and four ample ladies) danced down the stairs and up a storm. It was a
jaw-dropping introduction, one of the best starts to a concert I have
seen, and a standard impossible to maintain.
