I am an American, but I have to say that you are right on in these
observations and if it makes you sick that us Yanks still like him (I
do not), imagine how sick it makes me. I'm beginning to wonder if the
American people have collectively exchanged their thinking capacity
for a flag and a tootsie-pop.
As for the French, I have never been there and know no French people
so there is no way for me to have and INTELLIGENT opinion about the
French. They helped us become a nation, however, and gave us the
Statue of Liberty, a wonderful gift which declares a set of values
that I am proud of as an American, even if the 'system of the moment'
in the US has forgotten all about it.
You may be sure of this though, Mr Frenchman (I assume that you are
French), we Americans are tough and resourceful and are not, in the
aggregate, entirely stupid, even if we do, lately, frequently indulge
in the patriotism of the ignorant. We've dealt with fools and
charlatans before and we will deal with them now.
Those in this country who are so proud of America's might might want
to consider that America is the mightiest nation on Earth largely
because we were the only country who can/could be trusted with that
might.
What I want, as an American, is for us to "walk the walk" and once
again manifest the values that we give lip service to but do not
evidence ourselves. Our 'liberty' is being dismantled, inch by inch,
in the name of National Security, permitted by our declaration of a
"war" against a column of smoke, an enemy with no identity or national
borders that we might cross, do battle, and defeat, thus ending the
war. As it is, we are fighting a war that has no foreseeable end and
thus permitting the constraints of 'wartime necessities' to continue
dismantling our liberty ad infinitum. This is what I am concerned
about. If the framers of our Constitution could see what we're doing
with it now they would be enraged! I do not want America to become a
nation of hypocrits!
As I said, Mr Frenchman, we are not all fools or bullies and some of
us are willing to love you even if, at the moment, we do not, because
we don't really know you.
