A touching instance of laughter being the best medicine concerns Daily
Mail editor Paul Dacre. While the cheeky rascal was recovering at home
from his heart valve surgery, he was richly cheered by a gift from the
office. My so-called rival Peter McKay sent his guv'nor a video of the
Simpsons, a show Paul had inevitably loathed for years without having
clouded his objectivity by ever watching it. Once he'd seen a few
episodes, however, he concluded The Simpsons is in fact magnificent -
Doh! - and his mirth did him a power of good. "Och, laddie, but for
me," says Peter, in an obviously invented quote, "he'd have been a
goner months ago." There is no word of Paul's favourite character, but
Ladbrokes refuse to take bets on Mr Burns.
