Mike, it's true that circa 1996 is when the heyday of
alt.fan.chris-elliott was at it's zenith. I'm really not sure what
heyday or zenith means, but what I mean is that there were about a
dozen regulars (I can still name some of them) that entertained
themselves here. Oftentimes we didn't really talk about Chris Elliott
so much as acted like him. We had mock debates, fake tool belt wars,
etc. Whomever was the most unflapable seemed to be the winner. I
tended to post a lot, and thought I was so funny, just like I still do.
Turns out, I'm not, but that doesn't stop me. One interesting thing
is that there are at least six people that I virtually "met" here, and
they became my friends. They have mailed me free funny stuff, we've
borrowed stuff back and forth, remembered birthdays, weddings, births,
even quite a few phone calls and many live instant message chats.
Chris Elliott fans seem to have a certain intangible sensibility in
common. If you want to Yahoo Message chat with me, feel free: I'm
"thecitychicken" on there.
