Is this supposed to have any connection to what I wrote?

The church was not paying anyone to do anything.

Churches occasionally do stuff for senior citizens.  Meals on wheels,
sending the children's choir to a nursing home to sing on certain
holidays, 
Sometimes just sending someone to check in on those who have no one to
look after them.  I believe the concept of "good deeds" exists in Judaism
as well, though perhaps not in your version of it.
