I signed up for my bank's^Wcredit union's online check writing service.
I get charged nothing for it (as long as I write fewer than some number
of checks per month -- and I don't know the number).  Apparently, if
they can do an electronic transfer, they will, otherwise they print and
mail a check.  Not bad for $0 per check.  Does Chase do an electronic
debit from your bank account when you pay?
