Ever vigilant for the possibility of "raising" I start my textual
numbers right at the left end of the check, and need as much
verbiage as possible to fill up the intervening space.

Have you ever noticed that some of the newer checks start that
line well in from the end of the paper, leaving open the
possibility of "raising"?
