Personally, a lot of that has to do with what happenes in the next few 
months.  Who wins the election?  What do they do?  Is Obama a true beliver

in the anti-war stuff or is he stringing them along?  Is Hillary 
sufficiently charismatic to keep a calculating foreign policy going?  
Would McCain drasticly up our involvement in the middle east promising us 
a Nixonian 'quick' fix?  

I mean really the next couple of decades are going to be defined by 
terrorism and our response to it: the new dialectic of our age, McWorld vs

Jihad (read the book with the same title, and while it flirted with 
interezsting concepts it was mostly disapointing).

No, we'll have a check soon as the last duty a president must fufill gets 
checked on: they need to not have their gains tossed away by thier 
successor (you can apply this to the elder Bush or Clinton depending on 
your view point).  After that, the policy choices will be judged by a 
whole host of things that happened afterwards.

In a 'once the partisan issues are set aside we can take a sober look at 
things' sort way, I'm sure that you're right.
