I attended a lecture series in San Francisco where McPhee was the
guest speaker (actually the guest answerer, because the guests are
interviewed). He is a most unassuming man, almost to the point of
being boring, with a sly sense of humor. On the whole, I'd rather
read his books than listen to him talk.
I know that you are a devotee of thrift stores, but the best place for
a really wide range of inexpensive books is the Book Bay at Fort Mason
in San Francisco; I will bet a dollar to a paperback that they have
McPhee books. And for a really great book blow-out you should attend
the book sales of the S.F. Public Library, also at Fort Mason. Here
is what it looks like:

You can come away with boxes of books without spending too much. I
still have books on my to-read stacks from last year's sale.
