No, not the West Virginia primary. That was no surprise, and neither
changes anything nor is a ****tent of anything. I'm talking about the
special election in the Mississippi first congressional district:
The Democrat, Travis Childers, won handily with 54-46. Why is this
interesting? Because this was a solid safe Republican district. In
2004 it voted for Bush 62-37.
The Republican party sent in barrels of cash as well as people like
Mike Huckabee and Trent Lott to campaign. The Republican candidate,
Greg Davis, was pretty mainstream (by Republican standards) with no
obvious scandals attached to him. This was not a "too whacko even for
us" result.
In ordinary years this wouldn't have been a race. It would have been
a ratification of the Republican nominee. But this year they lost,
and they lost badly. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling about November.
