Gildersleeve was played by two actors - Harold Peary and Willard Waterman.
And they *both* look exactly like he sounds (they both sounded very
similar too, although Waterman deliberately did not use many of Peary's
vocal mannerism, including the famous leering chuckle, out of professional
respect).

What's fun is listening to "Fibber McGee and Molly" when Gildersleeve had
a bit part on that show before he was spun off.
