As it happens, I bought a converter box yesterday at Best Buy, for 
$10 net.

Now I get unique 5 PBS stations instead of 2.  There are a bunch of 
other stations as well, but most of them are just showing weather or 
infomercials at the moment.

I could afford cable, but why?

Lars might be right about the future. Another version of the future 
might be "watching TV" over the internet.  My daughter has no land 
line phone and no TV, but is always up to date on "The Office", "30 
Rock", "The Daily Show", etc. because either the whole show or the 
good parts is available online.
