In 75, I was driving the family pickup (so maintenance wasn't my
responsibility), and the clutch didn't work when I went to leave
college.  That truck always started easily, so I cranked it backwards
on the starter, then cranked forward and gave it enough gas to start.
I had to do something similar at two stop signs on the way home, but
otherwise had little problem.  

Not a "very powerful car", but at 1900 cc (113 in^3), it was the
largest engine I've ever owned.  (I bought it six years later and
drove it for three more years.)
